Waltner, 617/495-7401,, FAX 617/495-7485 The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) requires the fabrication and assembly of one (1) Support Structure Assembly for the Hectospec Fiber Positioner, a focal plane instrument being built at SAO for the Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT), located in Amado, Arizona. The Support Structure Assembly is the primary support structure of the dual robot positioning system of the Hectospec Fiber Positioner. The Support Structure Assembly consists of two large welded, and individually machined structures, the Mounting Flange Assembly and the Lower Unit Support Assembly. The Mounting Flange Assembly will be fabricated from 410 Stainless steel plane and is 80" diameter and 9" high. After welding of the various components that form this structure, finish machining of specified surfaces, features, and holes will be required. The Lower Unit Assembly will be fabricated from 410 Stainless Steel plate, rod, and tube and is 65" diameter and 18" high. The two structures will be match drilled, pinned, and bolted together to form the Support Structure Assembly. These combined structures which form the Support Structure Assembly weigh approximately 2100 lbs.
