14-15, 1998 A two day classified conference, "Engineering the Total
Ship (ETS '98)," sponsored by the American Society of Naval Engineers
(ASNE) in liaison with the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), is
scheduled for 14-15 May, 1998 in the Washington, DC area. The purpose
of this symposium is to foster dialogue between engineers and
researchers in government and industry by bringing together the ship
(Hull, Mechanical and Electrical (HM&E)) and combat systems
communities. Original papers are requested on air, surface, and
subsurface topics involving current and future combatants that deal
with mission, threat, design, technology, requirements, construction,
testing, or maintenance. Priority will be given to papers that provide
a broad range of engineering experience and initiatives that foster
technical interchange between the ship systems and combat system
disciplines. Suggested paper topics include: Low Signature Design,
Threat Descriptions & Projections, Ship Signature versus Weapon System
Performance, Mission Requirements, Electromagnetic Interference (EMI),
Topside Design, Ship Launcher Integration, Integration of the Ship with
Aircraft and Combat Systems, Ship Performance versus Weapons
Performance, Impact of Physical Integration on Functional Performance,
Weapon and Sensor Cutout Zones, Integration of Ship and Combat Data
Systems, Hull Design, Noise & Sonar Performance, Manning and
Automation, Ship Design & Weapon Performance versus Survivability,
Integration and Performance of Sonar and Radar Arrays, Test, Trials,
and Evaluation, Integration of C4I Systems, Total Ship Computer
Architecture. Submit a 1-2 page technical UNCLASSIFIED abstract that
describes the paper topic and scope. Abstracts will be accepted until
1 August, 1997. Include the paper title, author's name, address, phone
