The Dalhgren Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren, VA is soliciting proposals on a sole source basis for a fixed price contract for the reaction of advanced, developing materials to high-velocity particle impacts such as would be experienced during high-speed flight through rain and/or cloud environments. This characterization data will be obtained in the Single Impact Facility (SIG) at GRC International. GRC has demonstrated that they can successfully manufacture and launch the nylon beads required to simulate a significant portion of the desired impact environment. Additional effort will be required to (a) develop ability to launch 300um beads at higher velocities and (b) obtain additional data over the required range of particle size, velocity, impact angle and target temperature. The scope of the effort will consist of 42 shots. In order to adequately characterize the erosion performance for the material of interest, it is necessary to obtain data over the following range of parameters: Bead Size 300-900um; Velocity 2-5 km/s; Impact Angle: 30-90 degrees; Target Temperature: 20 and 3000 degrees C. GRC will perform the following tasks: assist in test planning; conduct the tests; record and reduce the data; and prepare a test report.
