The National Renewable Energy Laboratory anticipates issuing an RFP in mid-September 1997 for the perfomance of research and development in the general area of solar thermal energy. The primary objective is to explore new concepts for using solar thermal energy which results in at least 50% cost reduction in residential hot water or which create significant new applications and markets for solar thermal energy. New applications include predominantly international markets, such as desalination, water disinfection, water pumping, cooking, and crop drying. Analytical, modeling or experimental investigations are appropriate for the proposed work. The solicitation consists of two phases, with multiple Phase I awards aimed toward proof of concept and/or refinement of design and cost analyses. Phase 2 awards will be considered only for those successfully completing Phase I.
