NASA/JSC plans to issue a Request for Quotation (RFQ) for the acquisition of one three-fingered robot hand with strain gauges, Barrett Technology BH8-250 hand. The new hand must match required mechanical dimensions and actuation of the existing hand for the successful operation of the symmetric robot system. The particulars of the complete turn-key system include: physical 1.18-kg 3-fingered robotic hand; power supply unit (5vdc and 36vdc); 3-m oleflex cable (hand to power box); set of self-adhesive oliflex guide clips; 3-m serial cable (computer to power box); clear lexan robot lab-bench mount; 86-mm threaded universal mounting ring; 3.5-inch diskette with all required software; user/maintenance manuals; maintenance kit with 5-yr lubricant supply; 90-day warranty; and strain-gage option for all three finger-tip joint torques. This procurement is being conducted under the Simplified Acquisition Procedures (SAP). NASA/JSC intends to purchase the items from Barrett Technology, Inc. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Barrett Technology has supplied an existing hand to the Dexterous Robotics Lab and maintains the patent on design. The Government intends to acquire a commercial item using FAR Part 12. Interested firms have 10 days from the publication of this synopsis to submit in writing to the identified point of contact, their qualifications/capabilities. Such qualifications/capabilities will be used solely for the purpose of determining whether or not to conduct this procurement on a competitive basis. Responses received after the 10 days or without the required information will be considered nonresponsive to the synopsis and will not be considered. A determination by the Government to not compete this proposed effort on a full and open competitive basis, based upon responses to this notice is solely within the discretion of the Government. Oral communications are not acceptable in response to this notice. All responsible sources may submit an offer which shall be considered by the agency. An Ombudsman has been appointed.
