The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is conducting a survey to
identify potential licensees for the marketing, distribution and/or
further development of the Java-based Remote Document Server (RDS)
software developed by the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory
(EMSL) for the Department of Energy. The EMSL Remote Document Server is
a new software application designed to facilitate desktop collaboration
and multiple authoring between users of different and/or remote
computing platforms. RDS enables users to remotely share and
collaborate on documents via the Internet or via a private network. It
is written in 100% Java (Version 1.1.6 of Sun's JDK), and runs either
as a stand-alone desktop application on any Java 1.1 enabled machine,
or within any Java 1.1 enabled Web browser. RDS is currently
deployable on most platforms including Windows 95/98/NT, Macintosh and
most versions of UNIX. The RDS software consists of two parts: the
back-end document server, and the client-side browser. The document
server sits on any machine and acts as a database for users' documents,
storing and retrieving all types of files. The client-side browser
enables the users to access the database, and provides them with the
ability to upload, download and view documents on their local client
machine. All user interactions take place using the familiar icon-based
modern GUI methodologies, e.g., displaying documents as interactive
icons in a window. RDS has important features that aid in the
collaborative authoring of documents. These include remote or local
access control to documents, record locking management, a view-only
window option, edit-history recording, and inter-operability. The
principal author of a document can quickly set access control and
privileges to determine who else is allowed to co-author, delete,
rename or just read the document. User directories can be made
accessible that allows users to quickly view files of other authors.
Emailing is also built into the document browser to further facilitate
collaboration between authors. A detailed description of this software
product is available at the Internet address provided. Interested and
qualified firms should respond in writing, postmarked, emailed or faxed
no later than October 30th, 1998. Posted 09/27/98 (W-SN254972). (0270) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0012 19980930\D-0004.SOL)
