Westinghouse Savannah River Company (WSRC), management and operating
contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy's Savannah River Site
(SRS) near Aiken, South Carolina. The purpose of this notice is to
determine public interest in licensing vitrification technologies. The
technologies available for licensing are as follows: (1) The Thermo
method of determining glass durability and solubility; (2) The VisComp
method of determining glass viscosity; (3) The LAMP method and
compositions for lowering the melting temperature of waste glass; (4)
The RASP method for treating materials for solidification; and (5) The
Dis-Solve method for dissolution and stabilization of silica rich
fibers, including asbestos and fiberglass. These technologies can be
used individually or in various combinations, depending on the
application, and so can be licensed individually or in combinations.
Fiberglass industry applications include the ability to develop glass
compositions with a high dissolution rate in saline solutions and the
ability to optimize viscosity of glass compositions. Mining industry
applications include the ability to fuse EPA RCRA hazardous waste
materials into extremely durable and safe glass products. Other
industrial applications include a variety of processes for vitrifying
hazardous, radioactive, and mixed wastes. Respondents will receive fact
sheets, technology briefs, and instructions for preparing and
submitting a business plan, an integral part of the licensing process.
Please respond to this notice by March 5, 1999, and submit business
plans by April 5, 1999. However, WSRC will accept inquiries and
business plans at later dates if licensing opportunities remain
