56 -- MARKET RESEARCH ON FRANGIBLE STRUCTURES POC Deborah Young, Contracting Officer, (405) 734 -- 7364; Lou Wilton, Technical Engineer, (405) 734-3445 The 38 LS/LGCE is requesting information on frangible structures suitable for use to support Far Field Monitor antennas for Instrument Landing Systems (ILS). This is a request for information only, no specific requirements exist at this time. This is an effort to obtain market research on general industry capabilities to design frangible structures for Airfields. The purpose of this market research to determine if industry has developed standard products, designs, or design specifications for frangible structures which could be used for Far Field Monitor support poles for Instrument Landing Systems (ILS). Designing for frangibility is complicated by the requirement for enough rigidity where shut down of the ILS does not occur through swaying. Under swaying conditions (manufacturer says greater than plus or minus 8 degrees laterally or 6 inches differentially), the FFM could interpret the propagated signal as having irregularities. Additionally the varying location-unique conditions (soil, wind loading, ice, etc) add to the difficulty in developing a standardized design for a frangible FFM support for all situations. The purpose of these low-impact resistant structures is not only to withstand dead load, operational loads, and survival loads without distress, but also to break into fragments upon accidental impact of a lightweight aircraft. The resulting damage to the aircraft would be such that the aircraft remain sufficiently airworthy to allow the pilot to land the aircraft safely. Far Field Monitor antenna physical properties (antenna only): Weight: 60 pounds, Height: 12 inches,Width: 50 inches (= 4.16 feet), Depth: 108inches (= 9 feet). Support structure would usually be between 10 and 20 Feet High, could be up to 50 feet high (depends on terrain).
