94550 A -- LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY SEEKS PARTNERSHIPS WITH
INDUSTRY TO COMMERCIALIZE HIGH EFFICIENCY INEXPENSIVE REPLICATED X-RAY
OPTICAL DEVICES BASED ON SPUTTER DEPOSITION ONTO SUPER-POLISHED
REUSABLE MANDRELS SOL CBD99-021 DUE 103199 POC Veronica Lanier (925)
422-6416 Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the
University of California under contract with the U.S. Department of
Energy (DOE) has developed the capability to fabricate high efficiency
inexpensive replicated x-ray optical devices based on sputter
deposition onto a super-polished reusable mandrel. After removal from
the mandrel, the device is a tubular shell with an inner surface having
the shape and surface smoothness of the mandrel. Depending on the shape
of the device, x-rays are focussed, collimated, or otherwise
manipulated when they enter one end of the shell, reflect from the
inner mirrored surface, and then exit in a new direction. The
replicated optics wavelength bandpass is determined by the sputter
deposited coating on the internal mirror surface and can be designed to
select a specific range of x-ray energies. The high efficiency of the
LLNL device results from the high quality of the mirror surfaces, large
reflection angle and thus the large solid angle of the tubular
structure and the shape fidelity of the replicas compared to more
conventional open geometry x-ray optics. Applications include focussing
optics for x-ray tube-based sources for x-ray crystallography,
focussing or collection optics for x-ray fluorescence analysis, Wolter
x-ray microscopes, as well as a broad range of x-ray analytical
instrumentation. Note: This is not a procurement. Companies interested
in commercializing high efficiency inexpensive replicated x-ray
optical devices based on sputter deposition onto super-polished
reusable mandrels should provide a written statement of interest that
must include the following information: (1) company name and address,
(2) the name, address, telephone number, and fax number of a point of
contact, (3) a description of your company's expertise and facilities
in the relevant technologies. Statements of interest should be sent to:

Commercialization Office P. O. Box 808,L-795 Livermore, CA 94551
Attention: CBD99-021. Please provide your written statement within
thirty (30) days from the date this announcement is printed to ensure
consideration of your interest in commercializing high efficiency
inexpensive replicated x-ray optical devices based on sputter
deposition onto super-polished reusable mandrels. Posted 09/28/99
