COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF JANUARY 13,2000 PSA#2515PUBLIC BRIEFING ON NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION NEES PROGRAM The
National Science Foundation will hold a public briefing on Thursday,
February 10, 2000, from 8:30am till 5:00pm on the NSF Network for
Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) Program and NSF Funded
Research on Networked Collaboration in Science and Engineering. The
NEES Program briefing will highlight the program solicitation, NSF
00-7, "Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES): System
Integration." The briefing will be followed by presentations by NSF
Grantees on technologies that support networked collaboration in
science and engineering relevant to solicitation NSF 00-7. The goal of
the NEES program is to provide a networked, national resource of
geographically-distributed, shared-use next generation experimental
research equipment installations, with teleobservation and
teleoperation capabilities, which will shift the emphasis of earthquake
engineering research from current reliance on physical testing to
integrated experimentation, computation, theory, database, and
model-based simulation. The advanced experimental capabilities provided
through NEES will enable researchers to test and validate more complex
and comprehensive analtical and computer numerical models that will
improve the seismic design and performance of our Nation's civil and
mechanical systems. The meeting will be held at the National Science
Foundation, 4201 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA 22230, Room 110.
