The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, Coastal Systems Station, Panama City, Florida, intends to solicit competitive proposals for 750 kilometers of Lucent Technologies Truewave Submarine Reduced Slope fiber, or equal, with a covering as specified below. The salient characteristics of the fiber are: Attenuation <0.215dB/km, maximum @ 1550nm; Dispersion 1.4 to 4.8 ps/nm-km, negative, @1550nm; Index of refraction, core-clad 0.754%; Attenuation vs. wavelength 0.05 dB/km, maximum delta, 1520 1590nm, from 1550 nm value, and proof test strength 200 kpsi minimum. Fiber will be coated as follows: a Gore-Tex covering to a diameter of .017" and then an additional covering of Peek Crystaline polymer jacketing to a diameter of 0.38". This covering will be included as an option. Initially, only 20km will be procured with the covering so that testing may be conducted to verify the performance of this covering. In the event that the covering is not suitable, the Government will take deliveryof the bare fiber. The covering would be applied in batches of spool length so the coating requirement can be terminated if the test result are unsatisfactory. The minimum length of any piece of cable shall be not less than 20km. Lengths up to 40km are acceptable. Delivery of the initial 20km of covered fiber in 16 weeks is desired.
