A -- COCHLEAR NUCLEUS AUDITORY PROSTHESIS BASED ON MICROSTIMULATION SOL NIH-DC-00-11 DUE 112000 POC Donna M. Spicer, Contracting Officer, Phone:301-496-4487: Fax: 301-402-0178 E-MAIL: Donna M. Spicer, ds319h@nih.gov. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, National Institutes of Health, is recompeting an ongoing project which is currently being performed by Huntington Medical Research Institutes, under Contract No. N01-DC-8-2102. This requirement will study the feasibility of an auditory prosthesis for the deaf based on stimulating microelectrodes placed into the ventral cochlear nucleus. The research will include both animal and human studies. The ultimate goal is an auditory prosthesis for deaf individuals who cannot benefit from a cochlear implant. The prinicpal objective of this research is to implant a penetrating, multi-electrode stimulating array into the cochlear nucleus of deaf or soon to be deaf humans who are undergoing surgery that will involve removal of the auditory nerve and to test the effectiveness of the array as part of an auditory prosthesis system. The research will also evaluate in animals the feasibility of multiple contact site, multi-prong, planar, silicon microelectrodes as a future electrode array for cochlear nucleus based auditory prostheses. It is anticipated that a cost reimbursement, completion type contract will be awarded for a three year period. The solicitation is scheduled to be issued on or about September 21, 2000. Proposals will be due 60 days after the date of issuance of the solicitation. All responsible sources may submit a proposal which will be considered by the Government.
