NOTICE OF COMPETITION COMPREHENSIVE CANOPY PROGRAM DESIGN COMPETITION Registration Deadline: March 16, 2001 Submission Deadline: April 13, 2001 The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), the = nation's premiere transit system seeks proposals for a canopy design to = cover 46 escalator entrances throughout the Metrorail System. The = award-winning 103-mile System serves a population of 3.7 million = people in a 1,500 square mile area. The canopy design must protect = customers and equipment from inclement weather and enhance the built = and natural environments of Metropolitan Washington, D.C. The winning = design must further WMATA's tradition of innovation and design = excellence.=20 Metrorail Station entrances vary slightly in size, therefore, the = proposed canopy design must be adaptable to various dimensions. The = typical station entrance at street level is flanked by a three-sided = 1'-8"wide X 3'-6"high granite clad parapet wall with a clear opening = measuring 28'-6" X 44"-6". The parapet wall surrounds an uncovered = escalator well way that leads to an underground mezzanine used for = ticket purchases and fare collection. Below the mezzanine are = passenger platforms and rail beds. The L'Enfant Plaza Station North = entrance located at 650 Maryland Avenue, SW is a typical size Metrorail = Station. The construction cost of each canopy is limited to $300,000. The Comprehensive Canopy Program Design Competition will use an open, = two-stage format to select the winning design. Design submissions must = be presented anonymously. During stage one, a seven-member jury = consisting of architects, engineers, WMATA operations representatives = and other design professionals will examine design submissions for = program compliance. During stage two, the jury will select three = finalists to further develop their concepts for a not-to-exceed fee of = $50,000 each. Each finalist will produce a three dimensional model, = illustrations and drawings that illuminate their original design = submission. Finalists will make a presentation to the Planning & = Development Committee of the WMATA Board of Directors. The Board will = select the winning design. WMATA will award a commission to the author = of the winning design. Licensed architects, engineers, planners, landscape architects, and = allied design professionals are eligible to compete. Parties = interested in submitting a design proposal must first register with = WMATA as a competitor. The registration letter must include a brief = statement declaring the intent to compete, the legal name of the = competitor, mailing address, phone number and principal(s) who will = work on the competition submission. A 30"X40" form core presentation board in landscape orientation = containing an image(s) of the proposed design concept. The board must = contain a brief (not to exceed one typewritten page) concept = description. The board must not contain any information that reveals = the identity of the competitor. 2. A sealed, plain envelope labeled "Competitor" taped securely to the = back of the presentation board, containing the name of the competitor, = address and phone number. 3. A second envelope clipped to the board containing the competitor's = cost for completing stage-two design work, if selected as a finalist = (This is required of all competitors and must not exceed $50,000) and a = copy of the competitor's registration letter. This information must be = submitted on the competitor's stationery. The competition package must be delivered/mailed in a double wrapped = envelope. The return address must appear on the package.
