- Description
- BWXT Y-12, L.L.C., is seeking collaborators for completing the development and commercialization of an Applied Instructional System for Machinists (AISM). BWXT Y-12 manages and operates the Y-12 National Security Complex under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA). Specifically, Y-12 is seeking expressions of interest from potential collaborators in the completion and commercialization of a training program that uses simulation as a training tool a program known as AISM. As part of the DOE Nuclear Weapons Complex, the Y-12 Complex has significant experience in the development of training and simulation within the Oak Ridge Centers for Manufacturing Technology (ORCMT), website: http://orcmt.oakridge.org/. ORCMT was established by DOE to help maintain national security capabilities while bolstering U.S. economic competitiveness in numerous manufacturing sectors. ORCMT is a national resource for manufacturing technology: it serves as a catalyst for applied research, development, design, prototyping, production, and training. ORCMT combines the best scientific, technological, engineering, and manufacturing capabilities of the Y-12 National Security Complex and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. AISM is the subject of an invention disclosure with the primary purpose to teach machinists to program and operate a computer numerical control (CNC) machine. AISM is implemented as a three-part tutorial process that includes a computer-generated "laboratory" and testing operation. The core process consists of (1) illustrating the steps in accomplishing something by using an example and depicting the results, (2) having the student accomplish a similar task, and (3) testing the student's response for functional performance. The student uses a simulated CNC controller to program the machining process, and the system includes a testing operation where the student's program is graded for dimensional accuracy of the fabricated part and other CNC performance parameters. The core process of AISM may be easily adapted for additional industrial training topics and also may be easily adapted for use in skill standards training. AISM was developed in partnership with the DELMIA company and uses DELMIA's Virtual Numeric Control (VNC) simulation software. AISM integrates VNC simulation with Macromedia's Authorware software. More detailed, proprietary information will be disclosed to respondents only after execution of a Nondisclosure Agreement. To ensure consideration, interested parties must respond in writing to BWXT Y-12 to the contact below within 30 days from the on-line posting date of this announcement. Interested parties should provide the following information: (1) the name and address of your organizations; (2) the name, address, telephone number, and fax number of a point of contact; (3) a business, product, and financial summary of your organization; and (4) a description of your organization's expertise and marketing capabilities. Statements of interest should be sent to: Debbie Sumner, BWXT Y-12 L.L.C., P.O. Box 2009, Oak Ridge, TN 37831-8091; telephone 865-241-3111; fax 865-574-2000; e-mail sumnerdh@y12.doe.gov.!!
