- Description
- Air Force Research Laboratory, Air Vehicles Directorate, Aeronautical Sciences Division (AFRL/ VAA) solicits research proposals for the Structurally Integrated Compact Inlet Technology (STRICT) demonstration program. The STRICT program will demonstrate the aerodynamic and structural weight efficiencies realized by designing an aircraft inlet system using flow control as an enabling technology. In this program, we seek to demonstrate the ability of an integrated flow control system to increase total pressure recovery and decrease engine face distortion in a very compact, highly offset inlet diffuser. Work to be accomplished includes scale demos of UAV inlet system components. Analysis and tests include, at a minimum: Structural sub-element/actuator/effector/sensor integration, Aeropropulsion performance including operability, and control simulations. Additional testing required to bring the Technology Readiness Level of the integrated diffuser flow control system to a level 5 should be accomplished. Demonstration of integration details including actuator and sensor structural integration, power requirements, control system architecture, and flow control/engine interface requirements is important to reduce risk for future programs that will utilize this technology. Desired characteristics of the demonstration diffuser configuration are very aggressive, including a length to diameter ratio of 2.0, 100% line of sight blockage to the engine face, and a configuration applicable to future unmanned air vehicles such as UCAV and Sensor Craft. The purpose of the flow control system is to provide the aerodynamic performance necessary given the geometric constraints. The low risk, state-of-the-art inlet aperture facilitates vehicle integration trades and helps determine integration impacts for UCAV and Sensorcraft. The aerodynamic performance of the inlet system must be demonstrated to be consistent with requirements for UCAV and Sensorcraft. A complete preliminary design will be performed for a compact UAV inlet system. An interim detailed design will be performed that will allow for incorporation of conformal inlet apertures being developed under other AFRL programs.
