- ANNOUNCEMENT and CALL FOR PAPERS Conference on "Failure Prevention Technology to Improve the Bottom Line" The 56th Annual Meeting of the Society for Machinery Failure Prevention Technology (MFPT) will be held on April 15-19, 2002 at the Ramada Plaza Resort Oceanfront Hotel, Virginia Beach, Virginia. The MFPT Society Sponsors include the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) and the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC). In the planning of MFPT 56, the Program Committee will continue to promote the Society's policy of cooperation with organizations that have related technical interests. These organizations include professional societies such as ASM, ASME, SEM and STLE; and a number of Universities and Centers of Excellence. The Technical Program Chairman is Mr. Vernon Fox from United Defense LP. Mr. Henry C. Pusey, Executive Director of the Society is Conference Manager. The 2002 Theme reflects the goal of our Society to provide information on new technology with the greatest potential for rapid application by users to improve their " bottom line. In private industry the bottom line is profit; in government agencies it may be reliability, safety, mission readiness or total ownership cost. Failure prevention technology is highly multidisciplinary and ranges from material sciences to engineering. The Technical Program will consist of an Opening Plenary Session followed by at least three parallel technical sessions over the next two and one half days. Two of the tracks will emphasize new technology, while the third track will present practical case histories, a proven tool for learning problem solving and ways to avoid failures. The technical sessions at MFPT 56 will be developed by the Technical Program Committee based upon the abstracts submitted. Papers that relate to the THEME of the meeting are especially solicited, but abstracts may be submitted in any area that contributes to the prevention of machinery or structural failures. Paper topics include but are not limited to the following: Condition Based Maintenance; Condition Monitoring Techniques; Failure Analysis Methodology; Responsible Use of Technology (Ethical and Environmental Issues); Advances in Prognostics; Residual Life Assessment; Reliability Centered Maintenance; Fault Detection; Advances in Diagnostics; Integrated Diagnostics; Data Fusion; Distributed System Architecture; Sensor Technologies and Applications; and Practical Case Histories (Troubleshooting, Failure Analysis). Deadline for Abstracts to the address is August 31, 2001. Technical exhibits of new products and services are an integral part of the meeting. The number of exhibits is limited and will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Optional short courses will also be offered.
