NOTICE OF INTENT TO SOLE SOURCE The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in Morgantown, WV has an ongoing project to investigate the effects of asphalt fumes on pulmonary irritation, inflammation, airway reactivity, and lung injury. A routine way of assessing lung injury is to analyze the lavage fluid for increases in protein, albumin, lactate dehydrogenase, ad other enzymes. Currently, for this and other projects, the Roche Diagnostics COBAS FARA II is used for the analysis. Since Roche is no longer supporting the FARA II with reagents, supplies or service, we are forced to make the transition to a new instrument in the middle of our projects. IT IS CRITICAL TO HAVE AN INSTRUMENT WHICH WILL PROVIDE COMPARABLE RESULTS TO THOSE DONE ON THE Roche COBAS FARA II at the beginning of the project. The Roche MIRA Plus is the only instrument known to meet this requirement. The software and method of performing analyses are similar between the two instruments. Therefore, the government intends to negotiate on a sole source basis with Physician Sales & Service, Inc. Oakdale, PA, who has exclusive rights to sell the MIRA instrument. If there are vendors having the capabilities necessary to meet the stated requirements above, they may submit appropriate documentation, literature, brochures and references to Brenda L.
