- Description
- The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) plans to negotiate a = Purchase Order with New Mexico State University (NMSU) for the = development of the "Application of Remote Sensing Techniques to = Transportation Guidebook." The purpose of this project is to support = the development of a guidebook that is focused on the needs of regional = transportation planning agencies. The growth of transportation = networks associated with urban growth generates demand on city and = county planning departments as well as regional planning organizations = (Metropolitan Planning Organizations, and RPO's). Research is needed = to merge techniques of analysis with new satellite systems and the = demands of MPO?s. A program will also be developed to ensure the use = of these techniques and new satellite products by creating awareness = among transportation planning agencies about the potential of remote = sensing techniques to address practical problems. Professor Robert = Czerniak of NMSU is a recognized leader in applying geographic = information systems (GIS) technologies, including remote sensing = technologies, in the context of the transportation planning process. = Additionally, Professor Robert Czerniak of NSMU has developed a = research plan for more effectively forecasting freight transportation = demand in urban areas and the integration of new issues into the = transportation planning process. Because Professor Czerniak and NMSU = possess an extensive level of expertise and a unique knowledge of = remote sensing technologies, they are the only known source available = for this project. This is a Simplified Acquisition and the anticipated = award date is June 22, 2001.
