- Description
- The U.S. Army Tank-automotive Command (TACOM) is currently conducting a market survey and analysis to identify if an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU)is available that can be used on the M992A2 Field Artillery Ammunition Support Vehicle (FAASV). The purpose of the Auxiliary Power Unit is to generate electrical power for the FAASV and for a Paladin self-propelled howitzer electrically connected to the FAAASV via NATO slave cable. The APU shall consist of a diesel-fueled engine, generator, protection system, and other devices as required to achieve a complete APU. The APU shall generate a nominal 10kW required, 12kW desired, electrical output at 28V DC. It must start and operate in the temperature range of -25 degrees F to +120 degrees F with a desired operational temperature range of -25 degrees F to +135 degrees F, with the only cooling air coming through the existing FAASV APU compartment ballistic grilles. It must start and operate at altitudes of up to and including 8,000 ft. (Rated load may be reduced by 3.5 percent for each 1,000 ft above 5,000 ft.) The APU must fit through the large APU compartment side door, and it is desired that APU maintenance functions such as fluid level check, fluid fill and fluid drain be easily accessible through this door. It is desirable that the APU require little to no modification of the APU compartment or vehicle fuel lines, electrical power leads, and electrical control wiring. The APU will be controlled from the existing FAASV APU control panel, preferably with no modifications. Noise emissions from the APU must be below 85 dB (75 dB desired) inside the vehicle measured 2 ft. from APU compartment walls. The APU must be compatible with all EPA exhaust emissions requirements, and must include proper shock mounting. It is desired for APU to include temperature-compensated voltage regulation, short circuit protection, current limiting, and automatic APU shutdown for low oil pressure and overheating conditions. Other desired features include 24 volt starter, 24 volt glow plug or other cold temperature starting aid, overvoltage protection, and extendable mounting provisions allowing the APU to be extended and retracted in and out of the APU compartment for maintenance. The difficult challenge for potential systems will be high-temperature operation with airlow limited by the APU compartment ballistic grills. Interested companies are encouraged to provide descriptions of their items along with information regarding the heat rejection capability of the APU within a confined compartment and any other additional pertinent information to the US Army TACOM. Upon review of the submitted material, the Government may request an oral presentation from the contractor(s) for information exchange. APU compartment sketches and drawings may be obtained from the following URL: http://contracting.tacom.army.mil/ssn/UPAPU/APU_Compartment.pdf. This announcement constitutes a Request for Information synopsis and MARKET SURVEY. Information obtained is for planning purposes only. It does not constitute an invitation for sealed bids or a request for proposal nor is it to be construed as a commitment by the Government. In response to this market survey, interested parties shall provide literature on current capabilities and efforts. Proprietary information should be properly identified. Your submission should include organization name, address, point of contact and phone number. The response should be submitted by 16 Jul 2001 and sent to Mr. Chris Fuchser at fuchserc@tacom.army.mil or Mr. Gary Dycio at dyciog@tacom.army.mil.
