Description

The Defense Advance Research Projects Office (DARPA) intends to award a multi-year contract to Northrop Grumman, Electronic Sensors and Space Division (ESSD), Baltimore, Maryland, sole source, for continued research leading to the design, development, and initial testing of a foliage penetration (FOPEN) radar, suitable for installation on a helicopter. It is DARPA's current plan to install the radar that is developed on the DARPA A-160 unmanned helicopter in order to demonstrate real-time FOPEN performance from a platform that is an organic asset of the US Army. The radar will be capable of, and demonstrate, data fusion with a K-band co-located radar. This research will also include related embedded processing and RF communications, as well as antenna design and deployment, research components. This research is subject to the availability of funding for Government Fiscal Year 2002 (FY'02). This entire research effort, if authorized, might approximate as much as $40 million in value. Because of its previous experience, and because the radar to be developed will apply radar technology for which the contractor hold a patent ("Rotor Tip Synthetic Radar," Patent Number 4,638,315), Northrop Grumman is the only source known to the Government with experience, personnel and facilities, to undertake this research within the Government's schedule and resource constraints.
