Description
The below notice previously posted on the internet on 06/29/01 and printed on 07/05/01, is hereby amended to include one (1) option year. The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (MBNMS) requires a coordinator to oversee the for the day-to-day operations of the MBNMS's SIMoN monitoring program. The Sanctuary has ongoing monitoring studies and has recently developed an ecosystem monitoring program, SIMoN (Sanctuary Integrated Monitoring Network), in collaboration with research institutions throughout the Central California region. The goals of SIMoN are to (1) integrate existing monitoring conducted in the Sanctuary (2) initiate basic surveys or characterizations of all habitats and regions of the Sanctuary (3) initiate specific, question driven monitoring efforts with fixed duration (4) establish a series of essential long-term monitoring efforts that will continue into the future, and (5) provide timely and pertinent information to managers and decisions makers, the research community, and general public. The SIMoN Coordinator will be responsible for effective use of advisors to develop monitoring priorities, overseeing a request for proposal process to select monitoring projects, integrating monitoring results with resource management decision making, and expanding SIMoN as a model for other Sanctuaries. The contractor will be responsible for understanding monitoring programs around the nation to build their successful components into SIMoN. Required Knowledge /Experience: graduate degree in biological or physical sciences; knowledge of monitoring programs to support resource management issues; experience in conducting marine ecological field work in the north-east Pacific; and, knowledge of Title III of the Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act and the National Marine Sanctuary System history and mission.
