Description

The Association of Old Crows, in cooperation with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics(AIAA), will sponsor the third annual Space and Air Protection Symposium to be held August 29-30, 200l, at the USAF Research Laboratory, Kirkland AFB, New Mexico. The classification of the symposium will be Secret, U.S. Only. The Chairman of the conference will be Mr. Dave Hilland, Chief, Spacecraft Protection Technology, AFRL. The keynote address will be given by Brig Gen William L. Shelton, director of requirements, Headquarters Air Force Space Command. The conference will provide a forum to review the definition of terms and for discussions by a nucleus of professionals interested and/or working in this area. There will be three sessions. Session One will cover Requirements and Operations. Brifings will include Counterspace Threat Overview, AFSPC; Space Technologies & Projections, NAIC; Space Control Requirements and Reflection on Space Wargames, Col Kathy Roberts, AFSPC/DRC; Aircraft Protection Requirements, Mr Mike Weisenbach, JTCG/AS. Session Two will cover Air Protection Technologies and Programs. Brifings will include: Passive Fire Mitigation Technologies, Michael Bennett, 46th Test Wing; Intumescent "Instant" Firewalls, Michael Bennett, 46th Test Wing; Aerogels, Lenny Truett, AFRL; Spacecraft Vulnerability Study, Lenny Truett, AFRL; Simple Passive Extinguisher, Joe Manchor, NAVAIR; Ionomer Fuel Containment, Richard Mueller, NAVAIR; and Aircraft Self-Protection Using a Destructive Expendable, Duane Warner, AFRL/SN. Session Three is entitled Space Protection Technologies and Programs. Briefings will include: Laser Threat Warning and Attack Reporting, AFRL/SN; Commercial Spacecraft Survivability -- Mr Joel Williamson, UDRI; Current Orbital Debris Mitigation Issues as They Relate to the DOD, Mr David Medina, AFRL/DE; SMC; Modeling of Laser Degradation and Damage, Mr Don Aguirre, Ball Aerospace; Third World Nuclear Threats to Satellites, Glenn Kweder, Logicon; Spacecraft Protection Technology Program, Maj Scott Berger, AFRL/VS; Satellite Protection Design Guidelines, Mr Gary Liechty, AFRL/VS; STK Satellite Survivability Module, Mr Richard Evans, Ball Aerospace; RF Protection of Space Systems, Dr Carl Bloemker, Jaycor; Electronic Combat for Space, Mr Rick Smith, AFRL/SN; Hardened Materials for Satellite Protection, AFRL/ML; and RF Threat Warning and Attack Reporting, Mr Patrick Serna, AFRL/VS.
