Description

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting research on improving the technology to remotely construct mine seals. The proposed work will be conducted at NIOSH, Lake Lynn Laboratory located near Fairchance, PA, about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh, PA. This effort involves the construction of a mine seal and subsequent testing and evaluation of the seal and seal material. The mine seal will be constructed remotely through a borehole that has been drilled and completed into a cross-cut between the B and C drifts of the underground mine. If the initial mine seal is successfully completed, then a second seal may be constructed at the same underground location (after the initial seal has been removed). The proposed work for each seal will be completed over a two (2) month time period in three phases. Phase 1 -- Definition of Materials to be Used; Phase 2 -- Construction of a Remote Mine Seal; Phase 2A -- Large Sample Construction; Phase 2B -- Mine Seal Construction; and Phase 3 -- Development of a Summary Report.
