Description

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) intends to award on a sole-source basis a contract to Canon U.S.A for twelve (12) calcium fluoride lens blanks with diameters ranging between 220 mm and 377 mm and thicknesses between 71 and 100 mm. SAO requires material with very high transmission at wavelengths between 390 to 1000 nanometers, with losses less than 1% through a path of 50 cm. The lens blanks are to have a refraction homogeneity of 3 parts per million or better and a stress birefringence less than 15 nm/cm. Crystal twinning is permitted. Lens blanks will be generated to near final (Biconvex) shape according to drawings supplied by SAO. Delivery of all blanks required within 36 months. A determination by SAO not to compete this proposed contract based upon responses to this notice is solely within the discression of SAO. Information received will normally be considered solely for the purpose of determining whether to conduct a competitive procurement. No written solicitation will be issued for this requirement.
